It’s Valentine’s Day y’all! Get your boots on! And come get your drink on!
Thanks to legendary Texas vodka maker Tito Beveridge, and the many who have followed in his bootprints, Texas has become a leader in the craft spirits industry, producing the highest quality, best tasting spirits in the world. In 2012, these craft spirits producers joined together to form the Texas Distilled Spirits Association. Texas on the Rocks is the Texas Distilled Spirits Association’s largest and most entertaining tasting and sampling event. More than 1,500 craft distillers and spirits consumers from all over the world will come together at the Austin Music Hall in Austin, Texas on February 14th to help kick off the American Craft Spirits Association Annual Conference. Craft distillers, industry suppliers and craft spirits consumers will attend this event to share their spirits and taste those from others. Not only will the night be filled with outstanding libations, mouth-watering food, and amazing company, but the entertainment will be sensational as well.
According to Technomic’s Trends & Directions, alcoholic beverages will see a new flavor trend this year. Swiss flavorings and fragrances maker Firmenich is out with its annual Flavor of the Year proclamation, and the company’s top taste for 2015 is honey. Within the alcohol beverage world, pure honey has been a sweet addition to specialty drinks and to flavored spirits in recent years, but you could be forgiven for thinking that honey’s crowning as FotY seems a year or two overdue.
The Texas Distilled Spirits Association and Garrison Brothers Distillery are pleased to announce that Texas on the Rocks -- the largest distilled spirits tasting event ever -- will be held in Austin at the Austin Music Hall on Valentine’s Day (February 14) 2015. The Texas on the Rocks grand tasting room is OPEN from 7:30 to 10:30. There will be a special VIP-only Cocktail Throwdown before the tasting from 6 to 7:30 and a VIP Tito’s Taco Breakfast afterward from 10:30 to midnight.

Waco, TX - For the second time in two years, Balcones Distilling was named "Texas Distillery of the Year" by a panel of respected judges at the 2014 New York International Spirits Competition. Texas' famed distillery also earned three medals for its products. Brimstone, a powerful, smoky corn whisky, was awarded Silver. The distillery's newest release, a single malt whisky aged in French oak and dubbed FR.OAK, took home a bronze medal, as did the original '1' Texas Single Malt, Balcones' most highly-awarded whisky.
Our favorite of the Texas-based spirits are the whiskeys, with so many excellent brands to choose from. See them all in Part Four of our ongoing series, Build Your Texas Bar.
Texas is squarely where it’s at for a generous smattering of badass craft distilleries, and not just Tito’s awesome vodka from Austin. Small batch craft distilleries like Balcones, Garrison Brothers, IronRoot Republic, and my new favorite, Treaty Oak Distilling, that produces rum, vodka, gin, bourbon and tequila are producing some of the best spirits in the USA. It’s no Tall Texas Tale.

The ballot initiatives, which vary on the types of beverages that could be sold, follow a wave of similar measures across the state and region. Proponents have said they have not seen organized opposition.
